Weapons of the Transkarpatian War

From Atlas

This article is about the weapons used in the Transkarpatian War, which involved the Transkarpatian People's Army (PKNA), Strakni Red Army (ZRA), Stasnovan Revolutionary Army, and the armed forces of the Granzerian Republic (RDF) and Elesar, and a variety of irregular troops.

Nearly all Granzerian-allied forces were armed with Granzerian modified Stasnovan weapons including the SZ K58, SZ K70, as well as the newly developed Granzerian SZ K72. Granzerian-aligned insurgents and militias in Transkarpatia and Straknia, such as the Republic of Straknia, AK-ZG, and Kárpátia, were primarily made up of ethnic Granzerians living within the two nations. While they primarily made use of captured weapons such as AKM rifles, in early august the Granzerian military provided these insurgents and guerillas with SZ K59, SZ K65 and SZ K70 rifles to replace their older Stasnovan weapons.

The PKNA and ZRA, were primarily supported by Stasnovan allies, but also employed a large amount of domestic post-Granzerian equipment. Primarily the Transkarpatian forces used Stasnovan AKM rifles as well as the domestically produced APM obr. 1955, which was a modernization of the Second Great War era Granzerian GPK-44.

Communist forces and weapons[edit]

Many of the Stasnovan forces before the 8th of September were poorly equipped, and the 6th Army primarily employed T-62 main battle tanks, AKM rifles and MT-LB armoured personnel carriers. The Stasnovan 1st Guards Tank Army which arrived in Transkarpatia on the 8th of September had far more modern equipment, with T-67 and T-74 main battle tanks, AK-74 rifles and included both BMP-1 Infantry fighting vehicles and BTR-70 armoured personnel carriers.

The PKNA and ZRA forces were much less standardized compared to the Stasnovan or Granzerian troops, however the most common small arms in use by the PKNA were the AKM, APM-55, PPSh-41, SK.58 and a large number of SKS carbines. Many PKNA troops were irregulars, guerillas and hastily-assembled conscripts, whose equipment could vary wildly, and reports indicate a number of FÉMC 31M and Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifles saw service on the front.

The Strakni Red Army primarily made use of the domestically manufactured SK.58 and M-56, a Srpskan modification to the older Great War era GP 40. In addition the ZRA made use of the Stasnovan AKM, Transkarpatian APM-55, and the 2nd ZRA Independent Motor Rifle Division were equipped with SK.58 rifles.

Both the PKNA and ZRA armoured formations primarily made use of the Granzerian-made T-55AG, but after the 29th of July, most of these T-55s had been destroyed or captured, and a significant number of KzH T-34Gs were activated however they were of limited effectiveness against the more modern Granzerian PcKTr-38S2 tanks.

Formations of the Ziridava People's Army were mostly equipped with T-62 tanks, BMP-1 and BTR-60 APCs, 2S1 Gvozdikas, and BM-21 Grads.

Granzerian weapons[edit]

The Granzerian FÉMC AK72, which replaced the SZ K59, was lighter and considered more accurate than both the Strakni and Transkarpatian rifles but was considered high-maintenance. The interim rifle design, the 7.62x39mm SZ K70, which was originally intended to replace the K59, also saw considerable use and was preferred in urban and high-cover firefights due to its high stopping power and ability to penetrate light cover.

The primary MBT used by the Granzerian forces was the PcKTr-38S2, which had a 100mm rifled main gun, and was an upgrade to the Stasnovan T-55 first introduced in 1970, while the PcKTr-38 struggled against contemporary Stasnovan tanks, such as the T-67 and T-74, the Granzerian forces found that those tanks could be reliably engaged using ATGM and infantry anti tank.

The Air combat over the front was extensive, with the newest aircraft in both the Stasnovan and Granzerian air forces facing one another. The Granzerian K-7 Lightning and KmFzG-13 Weisserrabe aircraft performed well against the older MiG-21s and Su-7s of the Transkarpatian and Strakni air forces, but the newer Stasnovan MiG-23 and MiG-25s proved a more fierce opponent for the aircraft.
