The Republic of Alainia, commonly known as Alainia, is a Republic located in southeastern Serica. The country is based around the Alainian archipelago, and the primary island of Alainia, which is the largest island in Atlas. It is ruled by the President and Parliament which consists of the Senate and National Assembly, which are the upper and lower houses, respectively. Alainia is comprised of six states, in descending order of size, New Grand Murgris, South-Eastern Highlands, New Iona, Central Alainia, Tropico and Cockfosters.
The first Odentian explorers to discover eastern Alainia named the island in honour of the then Odentian king, Alain III. The name Terra Meridianis was also used extensively prior to the Acronian colonisation of Alainia. In the late 1790s the name was officially declared Alainia.
Following the First Great War and subsequent unification of the Kingdom of Acronia and South Acronia, the predominantly Cambro-Acronian Alainia found itself as an overseas territory of the new United Kingdoms of Acronia. After the contributions of Alainian soldiers during the First Great War, civil discontent began to stir seeing the outcome of the war as a betrayal of Alainia by the Cambro-Acronians, who had seen Alainia's disenfranchised and relegated to little better than a colony.
First Alainian War
The first Alainian War began as unrest regarding the colonial exploitation of Alainia by Acronia began to swell. The war lasted 4 years, and the Acronian forces, who had already been crippled by the first great war, met a compromise. Alainia was allowed nominal independence including an independent democratic system and limited military and diplomatic autonomy.
Alainia after the Second Great War
Second Alainian War
The Second Alainian war is believed to have had many causes. Underlying resentment from Republican elements of the First Alainian War was still present by the outbreak of the second war, also exacerbated by a lashback following the Alainian involvement in the Yetpan War and what was perceived as undue Acronian manipulation in the Alainian government. The dismissal of Alainian Prime Minister James Dampier in 1969 proved the breaking point, as Alainian troops in Yetpa, who had already seen occasional strikes and protests against their attached Acronian officers, began to see widespread mutinies and in certain occasions fighting between Acronian and Alainian soldiers would result in firefights.
Protesters and rioters stormed the parliament building and Acronian embassies in both Newport and Paterson, demanding the reinstatement of Prime Minister Dampier. In response to this, Acronian forces deployed to restore order and reinforce the government that had been put in power by the Acronians after dismissing Dampier. It is still a manner of debate among historians who fired the first shots of the war proper, but it is believed that a confrontation between Alainian army personnel and Acronian army personnel in Kooragang resulted in a firefight which quickly spread throughout the city. Acronian forces, victorious in the Battle of Kooragang were confronted by Alainian student protesters armed with clubs and molotov cocktails who were then fired upon, killing seven of the protesters, the lashback from the massacre at Kooragang incited further insurrection, with Alainian army personnel who were nominally expected to support their Acronian fellows, defecting en masse and joining insurgent groups in the jungles and mountains of Alainia.
A bloody six years of urban, jungle and mountain fighting ensued, Alainian insurgents using the terrain to their advantage and employing guerilla tactics against their Acronian occupiers. The war was the source of major anti-government and anti-war activity in Acronia, particularly southern Acronia, who sympathised with the plight of the rebels in Alainia. The rapidly falling popularity of the war ultimately ended in an Acronian withdrawal from 1975, resulting in the complete collapse of the puppet regime and total Alainian independence from Acronia.
Alainia is an observer state of the Vastava Pact, but does not have any mutual defence agreements with any of its members.
