The 2020 Ausfer-Ziridavan War was an armed conflict taking place primarily in northern Ausferiland, in territories claimed by the breakaway Republic of South Kardzhali. The war between Ziridava and Ausferiland began on December 2nd 2020 shortly before Ausferilandian military forces began laying siege to the city of Glaz, the de facto capital of South Kardzhali.

Prelude[edit]

Plachkovsti Massacre[edit]

On November 18th in the area around the small village of Plachkovsti, Ausferilandian forces massacred between 30-40 civilians, and executed 20 captive rebels after a brief battle for the village. Granzerian forces attached to the unit assisted the ANDF in their attack, who attempted to prevent the massacre but failed, resulting in a short skirmish between the GRDF and ANDF.

According to the accounts of a Granzerian soldier present at the massacre, Ausferilandian forces first executed the 20 rebels who had surrendered after the village was taken. Afterwards, around 70 civilians, all of which were either women or children, were rounded up and brought to a section commander of the Ausferilandian forces and the commander of the Granzerian 3rd Battalion 15th Motor-Rifle Division, Major Bela. At first it was expected they would be taken into custody and interrogated for information on rebel forces, however they were promptly lined up against a wall and declared "enemies of the state" by Ausferilandian leaders who were present. Rebel prisoners who had not been executed were told that they were about to witness the 'consequences of their actions', as Bela began to intervene to prevent the massacre. He berated the Ausferilandian officer, Major Krauss, who ignored Bela. Bela then drew his firearm at the Ausferilandians, which resulted in a standoff between GRDF and ANDF forces.

Major Bela then ordered Krauss to return with Granzerian forces to return to base with them, and threatened to open fire on Ausferilandian forces should he order the execution of any civilians. Although Krauss acknowledged this, he told Bela that if he were to leave without ordering his forces to stand down, he would order his forces to open fire on the GRDF. Believing this to be a bluff, Bela began walking back without ordering his unit to stand down. It was then that Krauss shot and killed him, resulting in a battle between the Granzerian and Ausferilandian forces. Krauss was also killed shortly after the fight began. However, as Granzerian forces were outnumbered 3:1, they were ordered to retreat by their new commander after killing a handful of ANDF forces, leaving the civilians at their mercy.

Although Granzerian forces retreated back to their APCs with only 6 casualties, they were then ordered to surrender themselves to the ANDF forces by their commanding officer. Under the threat of being cut off from support before and after the battle, they complied with the order and surrendered to the remaining Ausferilandians in the area. After this report was leaked by an anonymous member of the GRDF, outrage amongst the populations of Ziridava, Granzery, and South Kardzhali was immense. Although protests in Ziridava began to demand the government to intervene, outrage was most intense in Granzery. Federal elections and other protests were also underway at the time, which only added fuel to the fire in the country. GRDF forces deployed to Ausferiland also went on strike in response to the leaked report.

During the Granzerian retreat, the massacre of the village began. Official estimates from the OCN claim that at least 120 civilians were murdered as a result of the massacre. However, the government of Ausferiland has refused to make any comments on the massacre, and has actively attempted to suppress any talk about it amongst the Ausferilandian population.
